The transverse sinuses are part of the brain’s dural venous sinus system and run horizontally along the sides of the brain, from the confluence toward the mastoid region where they become the sigmoid sinuses. Because of their location on the sides, they’re commonly called the lateral sinuses. Other names don’t fit as well: “posterior sinuses” isn’t a standard label for these structures, “venous sinuses” is too broad, and “internal sinuses” isn’t used for this part of the dural venous system.
